For Bloggers — Autosave Problem

Bob Munson brought a WordPress problem to my attention. When editing posts, the autosave feature would eventually get into a state when one could not save or publish the post. This caused changes to be lost as the edit session had to be abandoned.

Specifically, the “Save Draft” and “Publish” buttons would be deactivated so there was no way to save changes, even though one could keep typing in more changes. What appears to happen is that autosave disables those two buttons while it is saving and reactivates them when it is finished — to prevent one clicking on one of them in the midst of the save operation and causing serious problems. But the buttons are sometimes no longer being reactivated.

This is a problem that occurred over a year ago and appeared to have been fixed. However, it has resurfaced. Thanks to Dan (WPSucceed.com), whose original work-around still functions, we have a fix.

I tested the fix on my own website and then applied it to bridgeblogging.com. What the fix does, is provide a link that stays active and when clicked, reactivates any buttons that have been deactivated.

If you look at the image to the left, you will see a link, unlock in the lower right of the “Publish” area. If the “Save Draft” or “Publish” buttons do not work, click on that link. It will reactivate the buttons and you can then take the appropriate action.
